Forza Italia!

The day so far belong to the Italians. They fence very well and seem to have the mental strength to win almost every close match. Tagliariol, Martinelli, Rota and Pizzo are now all in the final 8!

And enter the Champion!

In one of the last matches in the round of 64, Olympic champion Matteo Tagliariol (ITA) defeats Monich (BLR) by 15-7, using lightning fast actions that looks impressive and stands out even in this very strong field. Tagliariol look likes he’s going to be hard to beat today!

Sundman (SWE) through on walk over

Unfortunaterly, the #3 seed Silvio Fernandez (VEN) is ill and will not compete. This means that Sweden's Joar Sundman is through to the round of 32.

Jerome Jeannet through, but not easy

Olympic team gold-medalist, the #11 seed, Jerome Jeannet (FRA) wins his first bout against Torkildsen (NOR) by 15-14.

Pizzo (ITA) wins over Imre (HUN), semi-finalist in Challenge Bernadotte 2007. And then we have the first upset of the day. Benny Steffen (SUI) defeats the world’s #2 seed Weston Kelsey (USA) by 15-8!

Good morning!

A_Dsc_0003.jpg

It's minus 5 degrees Celsius here in Stockholom, we are getting ready to begin the round of 64  and the fencers are warming up. First in the hall today was Weston Kelsey (USA), the world's #2 seed, who were exempt from yesterday's poules and preliminary rounds. He will face Benjamin Steffen (SUI) who we all remember from the astonishing semi final last year aganist Pavel Kolobkov (RUS). Yesterday Steffen had a relatively weak poules round. Let's  see what he can do against Kelsey.

End of the first day

(2009-03-06)

_Dsc_0007.jpg

Two Swedes, Jan Tivenius and Joar Sundman, stay in the competition but it was really close that we they would be joined by several others. Too many 14-15 losses for the Swedes I think personally:-(

The matches tomorrow for the Swedes are

08.45 Jan Tivenius-Diego Confalonieri ITA

For Joar Sundman it's a lucky day. He was supposed to meet Silvio Fernandez who has fallen ill so Joar is automatically in the table of 32 where he will meet the winner from the match Berezkin (RUS)_Pelletier (CAN).

See the results and the table of 32

Don't miss the webbcast from Challenge Bernadotte! We start tomorrow at 08.00.

Swedes doing well in poules

(2009-03-06)

cDsc_0001.jpg

In the second set of poules today, Swedish fencers pereformed quite well. Tor Forsse, for example, managed to secure advancement by winning after being down 2-4 against Benjamin Steffen, (SUI), semi finalist in last years event. Furthermore, Reine Kase, Anton Samuelsson and Victor von Platen all won 4 out of their 6 matches and are through to the next round with fairly good ranking. Andres Gomez and Magnus Malmgren both ended the poule with 2/6, and advancement is uncertain.

...and we have started!

(2009-03-06)
